The Cylons occupy New Caprica. What was once a beacon of hope for so many has become a war zone, a deadly situation in which humans and Cylons live next to each other, but don’t necessarily live with each other. There are a vast number of conflicting viewpoints here, and they eventually clash and escalate the conflict beyond the realm of control; here, we have the Cylons attempting to create a peace between their kind and humankind, but they just don’t realize how difficult a task on that magnitude would be to accomplish.

Battlestar Galactica: Razor + “The Resistance” Webisodes Review

Razor

I’ve already touched on many of the thematic ideas circling Razor, considering it simply shows us the Pegasus backstory that was told in “Pegasus” through “Resurrection Ship”, but there are a few key bits of information presented here that we didn’t know beforehand. It’s all done through the character of Kendra Shaw, a bridge between the story we’ve seen and the story we’re seeing, and we observe how she essentially becomes Cain’s legacy and how that influences her mindset in the present. The kind of stories the writers are crafting probably need more time to breath–as did the Pegasus arc, as thrilling as it was–but all in all, it’s well done for a 90 minute movie.

Friday Night Lights “Texas Whatever” Review (5×12)

“Coach shows up and gives 100%. Every game, every practice. It’s more than just a game to us. Football is our life.”

Friday Night Lights has constantly tackled the ideas of what it means to be in Dillon and what it means to leave it, what it means to come home and what it means to move on. “It’s like a drug,” Tyra says as she kicks back with Julie on the hood of a car, listening to the sounds of Panthers fans celebrating the dissolution of the East Dillon Lions football program. “When you get outside of it, you see it for what it really is. But when you’re in it, it seems like there’s no other possible reality.”

Friday Night Lights “The March” Review (5×11)

The Lions are marching toward state, and this once 2-8 team is now moving right on through the competition. In an interesting stylistic choice, the playoffs are reduced to one episode, partly due to time constraints, but also due to the fact that it simply works. It doesn’t feel rushed at all, and the journey the show takes us on from that early scene in Coach’s yard to that final scene outside of the stadium is thrilling to experience.

The past is important. The memories you’ve shared with those around you stick with you throughout your life, influencing your decisions and your future relationships. Sometimes, there’s that one moment that fundamentally changes who you become. Maybe, for example, it’s a meeting with a football Coach, someone who takes jail and lying in a ditch somewhere out of the equation.

Battlestar Galactica “Lay Down Your Burdens, Parts 1 and 2” Review (2×19/2×20)

“People vote their hopes and not their fears.”

The opening sequence of Part 1 is masterfully executed, with each scene flowing into the next and building a sense of dread as we see characters in dark places. Sharon, closed off and distraught over the “death” of her daughter. Tyrol, beating Cally after he has a nightmare of his suicide. Baltar, behind in the polls and taking Hera’s death as his own daughter’s death. As we see throughout the two episodes, there’s a bigger picture to all this dread: with a presidential election coming up and with morale so low, if hope should present itself in the form of a new planet, then people will even go so far as to elect Gaius freaking Baltar as President.

I’d hate to be commander of the Pegasus, considering I’d probably die within a few days of taking command. In this episode, Commander Garner becomes the third to perish in the span of five episodes, and he goes the “sacrificing yourself for the good of everyone else” route by returning to the engine room he knows so well.

Veronica Mars “Silence of the Lamb”/ “Clash of the Tritons” Review (1×11/1×12)

“Silence of the Lamb” (1×11)

Hi, Aaron Paul! Hi, Max Greenfield! These two play Eddie Laroche and Leo D’Amato, respectively, the former a suspect in the E-String Strangler case and the latter a Deputy working on the case. It’s a storyline that’s a bit more cop-esque than usual, but it’s interesting watching Veronica start to actually fall for Leo as the case progresses. Here’s a guy who stands in direct contrast with the general dickish behavior that Sheriff Lamb’s so great at; he actually listens to Weevil’s “complaints” and seems to have a great rapport with Veronica, but alas, it’s not meant to be at the end. And here, we see that Veronica’s way of doing things certainly has its consequences along with its perks.

Julie’s storyline this season has been pretty disappointing, and the route the show takes to get to this episode is full of swerves (heh); as we see here, it finally comes crashing (I’ll be here all week) down, forcing her parents to face the reality of the situation: their daughter made some bad decisions and is now attempting to run away from her problems by literally running into some bricks.

Friday Night Lights “Kingdom” Review (5×05)

“We’re getting there.”

This is why I love this show so much. “Kingdom” is an episode ripe with entertainment, laughs, thrills, and small, beautiful moments, and it’s an example of Friday Night Lights‘s ability to not only portray the heartbreak and disappointment ever present in our lives, but also the pure joy that can result from connection and doing something we love.
