Saturday Night Live “Scarlett Johansson/Wiz Khalifa” Live Blog and Review (40×19)

MAYWEATHER/PACQUIAO: This is actually a very clever opening, and although I couldn’t care less about the fight, this is a great way for SNL to acknowledge its significance ratings-wise. The physical comedy of Pharoah and Bryant “fighting” each other is absolutely hilarious. GRADE: B+

MONOLOGUE: Scarlett Johansson is awesome, but this monologue is pretty forgettable. The MILF comment is pretty funny, but the “Love to Love You Baby” bit isn’t the best. GRADE: C+

RIGHT SIDE OF THE BED WITH GRACELYNN AND COREY: So, Kate McKinnon as Hozier is a pretty entertaining visual, but I wasn’t a fan of this the first time around, and that’s still the case. Many of the jokes don’t land, and these people are more annoying to watch than anyhting. GRADE: C

BALTIMORE ORIOLES GAME: “Baltimore has just been on FIRE this week!” This is a great sketch, and the inappropriate statements throughout are what make it. The Kiss Cam bit is really funny as well. GRADE: B+

BLACK WIDOW: AGE OF ME: See, this is even more pertinent because the new Avengers’ handling of Black Widow is pretty awful. This is a fantastic way to skewer the inequality in the superhero movie business, and it’s filled to the brim with hilarious images: the strawberry being shoved into Ultron’s mouth, the fire apology, etc. GRADE: A-

GIRLFRIENDS TALK SHOW: I’ve never been a fan of this sketch, but this particular bit is slightly better. I really like the discussion of the “promposals”, and Aidy Bryant going “Basic B” is awesome. GRADE: B

WEEKEND UPDATE: The Jenner bit is pretty fun, and it’s a good use of the Che-Jost dynamic. Also, I like Jost taking down Alito’s comments, which I have to say is pretty easy to do. Kate McKinnon is entertaining as always as Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Samwell Tarly and Gilly show up, and Jay Pharoah’s Shaquille O’Neal continues to be very funny. All in all, a good update. GRADE: B

MUSEUM: Taran Killam constantly shaking his hair is probably the funniest aspect of this sketch. The rest of it is simply annoying, which I guess is kind of the point (people really do throw around the word “random” way too much these days). GRADE: Dinosaur

BLAZER: This is one of those sketches that grows on you as it progresses, and it eventually becomes another segment relevant to today’s world. The second cut to the chief explaining his firing is nicely pulled off. GRADE: B+

VIRGIN ATLANTIC: Most of this sketch is made by the wonderful line readings by Bayer and Johansson, and the rest is filled in nicely by the cockpit dialogue. It’s a sketch that isn’t at its full potential, but it’s very entertaining to watch. GRADE: B

WIZ KHALIFA: I’m not a big fan of his, and I think the highlight of his performances is Charlie Puth’s voice. Anyway, what’s up with that dancing, and how many times does he repeat “Hold up, we dem boyz?”

JINGLE WRITERS: Eh. 11:55 sketch, and I don’t have much of an opinion on it. Taran Killam’s reaction shot to the McDonald’s jingle is probably the funniest part. GRADE: C+

NEXT WEEK: Reese Witherspoon/Florence and the Machine

For me the only thing that was really spot on funny was the Black Widow romantic comedy film because in truth that is pathetically the only way that Marvel might do a female superhero as lead film.
In saying that I am stoked for WB finally doing a Wonder Woman film ( she is my all time favourite superhero!) I pray it won’t be janky!
The other things that I liked were Ruth B G (Kate is just too funny) and Shaq done by Jay Pharoah, and the image of Samwell being compared to Jabba the Hutt in who wore it better! That made me laugh.
Other than that it was a rather middling show and I was sad for that because I do like Scarlett Johansson.
I am hoping for Reece Witherspoon and Florence + The Machine to be great because I really like them both! 🙂
