The Top 15 Television Shows of 2018

7 Jan

15. Who Is America?

14. Atlanta

13. The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story

12. Killing Eve

11. Better Call Saul

10. Homecoming

9. You: It’s actually a real fun time, check it out.

8. My Brilliant Friend

7. The Little Drummer Girl

6. Barry

5. Casual: The little Hulu show that could, running for four seasons and making us care deeply about these characters and their journeys. The final season is a lovely, bittersweet, and hopeful coda to the series.

4. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel: This is such a sharp, wonderfully written series that never seems to slow down, yet still makes room for fully realized character development. Brosnahan and Borstein have never been better, and the same goes for the show.

3. Bojack Horseman: Probably the series most equipped to break your heart in the most unique ways. It’s almost painfully smart, and that reveals itself in the biting humor, the minute details, and an incisive awareness of the human condition.

2. Pose: Boundless energy and a big heart help make this the best new show of the year. What it may lack sometimes in writing it more than makes up for with unequivocal passion. It’s an ambitious, imaginative, and heartfelt labor of love that is a pure joy to watch.

1. The Americans: For six years, this show delivered time and time again, effortlessly blending the intrigue of a spy thriller with the intense intimacy of a family drama. The ensemble, the writing, the music, and the wigs never failed to be impeccable. Like last year’s #1 pick (The Leftovers), this will go down as one of the great achievements in television history.

OTHERS CONSIDERED: The Handmaid’s Tale, Sorry For Your Loss, The Haunting of Hill House, Sharp Objects, Howards End, The Deuce, Escape at Dannemora, Marvel’s Daredevil, The Good Place, Dear White People, Westworld, Santa Clarita Diet, The Terror, GLOW, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Love, Succession, The Sinner, Patrick Melrose, The End of the F***ing World

I missed so many good shows last year. I’m watching Sorry for your Loss now and I have You, My Brilliant Friend and The Little Drummer Girl waiting in line next.

What do you think of Sorry for your Loss?

I really like it. I appreciate how it looks at both Leigh’s grief, but also how her family is handling the loss. And then getting to know Matt and who he was/how his relationship was with Leigh as the series goes on is sort of an interesting change from say seeing a major character pass away some time into a series after we know them. I think I have three episodes left.
