Person of Interest “Endgame” Review (3×08)

ATTENTION EVERYBODY: HERE’S MY REVIEW OF THE NEW PERSON OF INTEREST-“THE CROSSING”…..https://polarbearstv.com/2013/11/19/person-of-interest-the-crossing-review-3×09/

Although Detective Carter doesn’t start off the series as a major character, this episode is a showcase for her in an increasingly excellent season. I’m blown away by the character work done for Carter, both by the writers and Taraji P. Henson. It would’ve been easy for the storyline to feel rushed and melodramatic, but it is anything but; the episode brilliantly portrays someone not only seeking revenge, but also gaining insight about the value of cooperation and morality. This progression is paralleled with the flashbacks, both conveying her growth in similar ways and tying the concept of family to her two situations.

When you get down to it, it’s amazing how deep a supporting cast the show has, especially in regards to the women. Shaw, Root, and Carter have all had showcases this season, and each of those episodes has been compelling and exciting.

Of course, the other link to that supporting cast is Fusco; it seems as if he’s at the natural end of his story, but it’s disappointing that a complete arc for him is so much less developed than those for the other characters. Nevertheless, this episode does a nice job of emphasizing that Carter-Fusco relationship and the trust they share.

All in all, this is a fast-paced episode that barrels into a breathless cliffhanger; there are two episodes left this year, and both look to be great.

GRADE: A-

OTHER THOUGHTS:

-“Wait, that’s my grenade launcher?”

-I love that scene. I like how Finch immediately assumes the person in the video is Shaw.

-Alonzo Quinn is chilling to watch; he’s calm and collected, but he can be ruthless and is willing to do what’s necessary for personal gain.

-Bear?

-Elias is always magnificent. “Let it simmer for fifteen minutes, then stir with vinegar.”….basically a recipe for this episode, wouldn’t you say?

Person of Interest “Mors Praematura” Review (3×06)

e1e802324a264830c82997e3eb09abebJust a few quick thoughts coming up about this excellent episode…

-The major theme of this season is how much the Machine influences people, good or bad, and I like how ambiguous everything’s become; for it to be everything, it has to include Finch and Reese. This is a show that lets it’s plot unfold organically; it has a structure, but it isn’t afraid to completely shift the dynamics. As much as I like the Finch-Reese focus earlier, I also like the expanding of the world.

-I love the continuity regarding Shaw; although Root and last week’s POI aren’t the same person, they’re both people Shaw can relate to and even connect with. Both relationships started off with some distrust because that’s just who she is, but they grew into something more; yes, Root’s an antagonist (although the show’s really blurring the lines here, which I love), but there’s a mutual respect between the two.

-Also, Root and Shaw have the same name: Sam.

-Usually, these all-powerful groups are introduced into shows, and they end up being annoying. Yet, Vigilance doesn’t seem “all powerful”: they’re a group, they have a goal, and they’re carrying it out. Person of Interest has lots to say about privacy and information, and it’s providing some nice social commentary without coming off as condescending.

-I don’t have any idea what the Machine’s endgame is; Bear could be behind everything, for all I know. It’s using everyone, though, that’s for sure, (save for Root, but then again, just because the Machine is communicating with her doesn’t mean she isn’t just a pawn), and it’s really interesting seeing the transition away from previous seasons. As our view of the Machine changes, each character’s place in this all changes as well.

-So good to see Kirk Acevedo’s still around. In fact, I wouldn’t mind seeing a Fringe-POI crossover in which the POI women and the Olivias go around kicking ass, Finch and Walter argue about things, and Bear and Gene strike up a heartwarming friendship.

-I wish Fusco was playing more of a part in things.

-We also have a short storyline with Laskey and Carter this week.

-“I suppose it’s too much to hope that she tased herself?” “Knowing Shaw, it’s possible.”

-Shaw fighting the guy while Root ate the apple=awesome.

GRADE: A-

Person of Interest “Liberty” Review (3×01)

627-5Just a couple quick bullets coming up…

-Although the case of the week feels a little bland at times, I like what the show is doing for Reese’s character. He sees himself in the sailor, and it coincides with a time in which he starts to let go a little. He starts revealing some more of his past, and he starts to transfer some of that Terminator-like quality onto Shaw.

-Shaw isn’t a character I was entirely sold on last season, but it’s fun watching her shoot baddies up and banter with Reese. She’s becoming a sort of mentoree, and she fits in nicely now.

-Fusco’s great. I like how one second, he can be treated jokingly, and the next second, he’s saving everyone’s lives. Also, his outfit at the beginning of the episode is perfect.

-Elias is always a welcome sight, and I like how they’re creating a dynamic between him and Carter. She’s manufactured a deal in which he stays out of person, but Reese and Finch don’t know. It’s an interesting road to explore, and I’m impressed at how much we get out of Elias’s short scenes; Colatoni does some fantastic work with this character.

-That brings us to Root. Oh, Amy Acker, how I love you. She’s insanely good at slowly building up that terrifying exterior, and the audience feels that sense of dread along with the poor psychiatrist. Her delivery of that last monologue is chilling.

-Finch feels a little shoe horned in in this episode.

-I also like how the Machine has a new name for Root, suggesting that she’s not the enemy. In fact, this Root-Machine relationship is so compelling because it could lead to it rebelling against Finch. The Machine may crave approval much like Root does; they’re both calculating, ruthless machines, but they need to feel connected as well.

-Bear needs more screen time.

Hello, I’m a polar bear.

Welcome to this blog. There are millions of other blogs out there, but you chose to look at mine. No, you did not just randomly come across it; you chose it. I will accept nothing less.

As for what we do here, I think the title’s pretty explanatory. I’m a polar bear, and yes, I do watch TV. I am obsessed with various forms of pop culture, in particular television and film, so I started this to get my thoughts down in writing. I am a member of the fabulous online community of The AV Club (which all of you should check out), and I wanted to do something similar to that.

What will we review? Lots of stuff. Our TV reviews will include American Horror Story, Dexter, Breaking Bad, The Bridge, The Americans, Wilfred, Louie, Justified, Parks and Recreation, Community, Sons of Anarchy, Hannibal, Orange is the New Black, Boardwalk Empire, Homeland, Treme, Mad Men, Game of Thrones, Archer, New Girl, Parenthood, Orphan Black, Person of Interest, The Walking Dead, Childrens Hospital, NTSF:SD:SUV::, Girls, Nikita, Strike Back, Veep, Banshee, The Vampire Diaries, How I Met Your Mother, Arrow, Revenge, Scandal, The Newsroom, Raising Hope, and others I can’t think of right now. Only some of these will have regular coverage, but I’ll try to get in some posts about all of them. I will also be reviewing new pilots, and may decide to pick up some more shows.

Our TV Classic reviews may include shows like The Shield, The Wire, The Sopranos, Deadwood, Friday Night Lights, House, 24, Lost, Chuck, Terriers, Arrested Development, The West Wing, Fringe, Boston Legal, and others.

*I apologize, but many of these shows’ reviews will start in the middle of their seasons, as I am just starting to write. However, I will try to give some thoughts on the episodes before.

Our film reviews will include whatever movies I decide to watch at home or in the theater, and can be new releases or old.

I might also post some random stuff; fan fiction, thoughts on entertainment news, etc.
