The Americans “The Walk In” Review (2×03)

13 Mar

60352824Elizabeth Jennings is such an interesting character.

First off, Keri Russell is brilliant, and second off, there’s a compelling nuance to her character that endears her to me; she’s the crowbar wielding badass at one moment and a protective mother at another, but what happens when her two worlds clash?

Justified “Wrong Roads” Review (5×09)

12 Mar

zap-justified-season-5-episode-9-wrong-roads-photos-20140311

Well, Justified is back, ladies and gentlemen.

After a bit of a stumble, we’re back in fine form tonight; this is mostly due to the fact that everyone’s back in Harlan now, allowing for sharper interactions and increased tension. One of the major problems of season 5 so far has been a feeling of detachment, a lack of forward momentum that seems to be hurting the show a bit.

True Detective “Form and Void” Review (1×08)

10 Mar

True-Detective-Season-1-Episode-8-Video-Preview-Form-and-Void“Once, there was only darkness, so if you ask me, the light’s winning.”

With that, season 1 of the absolutely fantastic True Detective comes to a close, capping off a thrilling, emotionally resonant, and satisfying finale. It’s sure to disappoint some viewers–especially the theorists–but overall, it’s a fitting end to this intelligently crafted, endlessly compelling eight-episode run.

Saturday Night Live “Lena Dunham/The National” Live Blog/Review (39×15)

8 Mar

140304_2754027_SNL_Promo__Lena_DunhamA MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT OBAMA: The premise behind this sketch is fairly average, but when you bring out Liam Neeson and have him repeat his “Taken” monologue, the entertainment level will still be ratcheted up a bit. The macho-man Obama stuff falls a bit flat, but overall, this is better than your normal political cold open. GRADE: B

MONOLOGUE: I could do without addressing the nudity on Girls again, as I’m past tired of that discussion (also, uh oh, does that mean more Internet trolling tomorrow?). However, I’m a sucker for double entendres, and Kate McKinnon in particular is great as Dunham’s grandmother. GRADE: B-

Banshee “Homecoming” Review (2×09)

8 Mar

122f909e42344483c4917dc4947cab10“Real justice is personal. Sometimes the only way to get it is with your own two hands.”

For an episode that’s supposed to be a set-up for the finale, it still feels like a whole bunch of stuff goes down. That’s Banshee for you, constantly bringing the action and, more recently, the fantastic character work.

Hannibal “Sakizuki” Review (2×02)

8 Mar

dd61809af2c6484dc8939806c8682458“One of these things is not like the other.”

“Sakizuki” opens with a terrifyingly intense sequence, one in which Roland Umber, the man caught in the eye of people from the end of last week’s episode, attempts to escape. The camera follows him as he agonizingly rips himself free, tears through a cornfield, and ultimately plunges to his death.

Community “App Development and Condiments” Review (5×08)

6 Mar

5x08_Promo_Picture_(3)I give this episode 4.5 MeowMeowBeenz.

Community can still bring it with the concept episodes, and “App Development and Condiments” takes that concept and runs with it, crafting a wildly entertaining 22 minutes of television. This is just plain fun.

The Americans “Cardinal” Review (2×02)

5 Mar

CARDINAL2top“We’ll get used to it, like we got used to everything else.”

The Jennings family has been through a lot recently. Last week, Philip and Elizabeth saw the bodies of a murdered family with ties to their own, and that traumatic event has compounded upon their paranoia. There’s an unsettling feeling permeating this second hour, a slower, yet still compelling episode with nice character work.

Person of Interest “RAM” Review (3×16)

5 Mar

RAMNow that’s more like it.

After a few shaky weeks, we’re back in full force to kick off the final arc of the season. “RAM” is the perfect mixture of backstory and teaser, shading in myriad character moments and tying together myriad storylines; this is some truly impressive stuff right here.
